Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam stated at a press conference held at the President's Office on September 1, 2026, that the government is evaluating proposals related to developing a dedicated "Cat Island" to relocate stray cats to a safe environment and provide them with care, including a proposal submitted by an international party.
The project to develop a dedicated "Cat Island" for felines is an important initiative aimed at providing a safe environment for the increasing stray cat population and maintaining public health and hygiene. Under this project, practical works have been planned to establish dedicated facilities for cat care and treatment mechanisms on that island. Moreover, developing such a center with specialized animal welfare services is a major step toward keeping island streets orderly. Once the project is completed and operational, it will help control the reproduction and proliferation of cats, and sustainably provide them with necessary food and care.
