The project to expand the 12.3-kilometer link road from the Addu City detour bridge to the Hithadhoo Stadium to four lanes has been awarded to China's Roadtime Engineering and Technology Company. Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua has revealed that physical work on the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimalé and the road development project in Malé and Vilimalé, under Chinese grant assistance, will commence late this year or early 2027. Under the Vilunveshi Grant Scheme supported by the Asian Development Bank, the government has decided to increase the current limit of MVR 100,000 and expand the scheme next year to allow private companies and startups to apply as well. In addition, the Reserve Bank of India has announced that the credit line of 48.50 billion Indian Rupees or approximately $506.58 million provided to the Maldives through India's Exim Bank became officially operational on August 27.
A major project to redevelop the main link road connecting the islands of Addu City to modern standards and widen it to four lanes was officially awarded today to China's Rotime Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. on a design-and-build basis. The agreement for this project was signed by Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib on behalf of the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, while Rotime was represented by its Managing Director, Zhou Weidong. Under this agreement, the road from the detour bridge up to the Hithadhoo Stadium will be expanded to four lanes, developing a total area of 12.3 kilometers. This project is expected to improve the condition of Addu's severely deteriorated main road and provide substantial relief to the transport system.
It has been announced that the development of the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital to be built in the Maldives with Chinese assistance, along with the major project to modernize the streets of Male' and Vilimale', will commence next year. The government decided on 24 September 2026 to establish a new company to operate the international commercial port being developed in Thilafushi (Thilafushi Port). The main objective of forming this new company is to strengthen port operations, deliver services rapidly and conveniently at modern standards, and bring further advancement to the trade and economic sectors of the Maldives. India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has announced that the USD 500 million (approximately INR 48.50 billion) Line of Credit facility decided by the Government of India to carry out development projects in the Maldives has been activated and officially made available for use. With this, the opportunity to sign agreements to disburse the funds required for individual projects carried out under the facility has opened up, with the RBI stating that funds will be disbursed under individual agreements of at least INR 5 billion. The bank also stated that at least 75 percent of the goods, services, and workforce required for projects implemented under this credit line must be procured from Indian entities, while there is the option to source the remaining 25 percent from other countries.
