As the 96th National Day of Saudi Arabia was colorfully celebrated on 23 September 2026, the longstanding friendly and Islamic brotherly relations between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia were reiterated on this significant occasion. On this occasion, the importance of further strengthening ties between the two countries in political, economic, and developmental fields, and working together for the benefit and interest of the people of both nations, was highlighted. Furthermore, greetings and best wishes on this joyous National Day were extended to the Saudi people and the government, reiterating that the solidarity between both nations will endure into the future as well.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed announced on September 23, 2026, that he will assist in efforts to save the life of Sivaraasa Anojan, a Sri Lankan national sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over posts published on social media against Islam. Two Sri Lankan lawyers, Faiszer Musthapha and Upul Kumarapperuma, arrived in the Maldives to meet President Nasheed seeking humanitarian assistance on this matter; he noted the seriousness of the remarks made by Sivaraasa, but gave assurances that he would assist for the sake of human dignity. He also stated that he would meet with relevant senior Saudi officials to request a mitigation of the sentence.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, the Vice President of the Maldives met with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on 23 September 2026. During this meeting, both dignitaries discussed the close relations between the two countries and avenues to further strengthen ties in various fields. Additionally, views were exchanged on issues of importance to both nations in the international arena, as well as significant topics ongoing at the UN General Assembly. This meeting represents an important step in reinforcing the long-standing friendship between the Maldives and Bangladesh and augmenting cooperation in regional and international platforms.
