In accordance with the Cabinet's decision to transfer the Home for People with Special Needs in K. Guraidhoo under the Ministry of Health's National Mental Health Department, Minister Jeela Ali disclosed details on 19 September 2026 regarding how the center's operations are proceeding. In addition, concerns regarding youth mental health and social media addiction were also highlighted today.
The government has decided to transfer the Home for People with Special Needs under the National Mental Health Department. The main purpose of bringing this change is to strengthen the services provided by the center and to provide psychological and social support through a more robust system. Moreover, with the transfer of this center under the supervision of the National Mental Health Department, arrangements will be made to provide coordinated special care and assistance required by people in need of special assistance. Additionally, this step will further bolster the management of the well-being of the residents at the center and the provision of quality services.
As disclosed on September 19, 2026, attention has increased regarding the negative link between youth mental well-being and social media addiction. In this regard, the importance of raising awareness to reduce the adverse impacts on the mental health of youth caused by addiction to social media platforms was highlighted. Furthermore, to protect against such issues and ensure the mental well-being of young people, cultivating healthy habits in using digital platforms was urged.
