President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to reform the Aasandha scheme and change the full free coverage previously provided to those earning more than MVR 60,000 per month to a co-pay or pre-pay system starting next October. The President also noted that the estimated approximately MVR 287 million saved annually from the state budget due to this change will be utilized equitably for the healthcare needs and essential services of lower-income individuals.
Efforts have been undertaken to ensure arrangements that provide healthcare services to citizens under the Aasandha scheme equitably and without any discrimination. Accordingly, one of the primary targets is facilitating easy access to essential and specialized treatments available under this scheme for every citizen, regardless of the region in the Maldives they reside in. In addition, priority has been given to eliminating barriers to service delivery and strengthening arrangements to ensure that assistance provided through Aasandha is distributed equitably among all citizens through the fairest and most transparent mechanisms.
