A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office stated that the Chagos issue is strictly a bilateral matter between the United Kingdom and Mauritius, and that discussions would not be held with a third party on this issue. Although President Muizzu requested to protect the rights of the Maldives, citing historical and cultural ties between the Maldives and Chagos, the United Kingdom has decided not to speak with any country other than Mauritius on this matter.
