Namal Rajapaksa, son of Sri Lanka's former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a Member of Parliament, was arrested on 4 September 2026 over a corruption case involving the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the country's national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, in 2013. Sri Lanka's Anti-Corruption Commission (CIABOC) arrested him after questioning him for more than five hours regarding allegations that he received approximately 800,000 US dollars or 100 million Sri Lankan rupees as bribes in the transaction. When he was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, the court ordered him remanded for a period of two weeks without bail. Investigative agencies state that this money was circulated through Singaporean bank accounts, while Namal has denied all allegations against him.
