The Maldives Qualifications Authority (MQA) has announced a new policy regarding the recognition of PhD educational certificates obtained in the Maldives on December 26, 2025. Under this policy, a PhD degree obtained from Maldivian institutions will only be recognized by the MQA if the course has completed a three-year full-time residency period. The authority informs that this decision is a step taken to maintain the standard of higher education in the Maldives and to strengthen the field of research. In addition, with this change, universities and colleges running local PhD programs will have to design courses to meet this new standard.

"Reading Nooks," or small reading centers, were established on December 26, 2025, in the Hiyaa Park area of Hulhumalé's second phase, to facilitate opportunities for the public to read books.
