An Egyptian doctor arrested for joking that there was a bomb in a bag at the departure screen area of Velana International Airport has been released at the request of his country's government. Police arrested Peter Saman Marzouk Saman, a 38-year-old Egyptian national who had arrived in the Maldives for a vacation with his family, in connection with this case. He was arrested for causing public alarm by claiming there was a bomb in the bag while his sister's luggage was being subjected to further checks, although he apologized, stating it was merely said in jest. Although the Criminal Court ordered his remand for five days in this case, he was released at the request of the Egyptian government and has now been deported back to that country.
A foreign fishing boat illegally fishing within the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) was intercepted by the MNDF Coastguard on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. In a special operation conducted by the Coastguard, the vessel was intercepted approximately 46 nautical miles northwest of HA. Thuraakunu at around 18:34 that evening. Work has commenced to take the vessel, seized with seven crew members, into Coastguard custody and transport it to HDh. Kulhudhuffushi in order for relevant authorities to take necessary legal action. The MNDF Coastguard continues to take uninterrupted special measures to protect Maldivian maritime territory and halt illegal fishing.
