Due to difficulties encountered in the use of paper straws, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided, via Decree No. 15/2026, to postpone the ban on importing single-use plastic straws into the Maldives until 1 June 2031. HDC has decided to remove oleander plants located in various areas of Hulhumale'.
In a decision made on 20 September 2026, it was decided to permit the import of plastic straws due to difficulties faced by the public and businesses in using paper straws. This change was brought with the aim of providing a solution to the lack of convenience and various difficulties encountered in using paper straws. Following this decision, the opportunity to import plastic straws into the Maldives has reopened. This is expected to bring relief from the inconveniences faced as a result of having to use paper straws.
On September 20, 2026, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) decided to remove the oleander (kaneeru) plants planted along the roads and public areas of Hulhumale'. The corporation decided to take this measure to remove those types of plants located in various areas of Hulhumale' and to maintain the safety and orderliness of the areas. Following this decision, the removal of oleander plants located in various parts of Hulhumale' will proceed under the supervision and organization of HDC.
