Amidst an ongoing rainy spell across the Maldives with a Yellow Alert issued from Kaafu Atoll to Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, heavy rainfall on September 12, 2026, caused flooding in the streets of Malé and damage to residences, prompting the MNDF to conduct an emergency dewatering operation. Due to the severe weather affecting multiple atolls, with wind gusts reaching 40 to 45 miles per hour and rough seas, significant obstacles were faced in travel coinciding with the school holidays. As southern islands were impacted by rain, resulting in flooding in Addu City and Fuvahmulah, MNDF and local councils stacked sandbags and carried out water pumping operations, while NDMA provided temporary shelter to a family of eight after a house in Feydhoo was damaged beyond habitability. Furthermore, the vessel named 'Uranus 1', which sustained extensive damage with nearly 30 feet of its bottom plating detached, has been drifting near Malé for over two months, with relevant authorities closely monitoring the vessel without granting permission to enter a Maldivian port.
On Saturday, September 12, 2026, heavy rainfall across various regions of the Maldives and severely deteriorated weather conditions led to significant flooding in the capital city of Malé as well as in many islands across different atolls. As continuous heavy rain flooded the streets of Malé, causing disruptions to travel and daily life, streets and households in some islands of the atolls were also flooded and sustained damage. An issue surfaced on 12 September 2026 regarding a heavily damaged vessel named "Uranus 1" situated within the maritime territory of the Maldives. Due to concerns that the damage sustained by this vessel could pose a danger to the safety and the marine environment of the Maldives' waters, relevant authorities are closely monitoring the matter and taking measures. Relevant official authorities are paying special attention and conducting necessary reviews regarding the presence of the vessel in Maldivian territory in such a condition.
