Due to the intensification of the southwest monsoon causing bad weather in the Maldives, the National Meteorological Service issued white and yellow alerts forecasting heavy rain and winds between 35 and 40 miles per hour. As a result of the bad weather and rough seas, an oil tanker named "KG 1" and a tugboat named "AL 1" under Customs custody broke their moorings and collided with a pillar of the Sinamalé Bridge on the night of 10 September 2026; however, the bridge structure sustained no damage and escaped with only minor superficial scratches. While the nine crew members aboard the two vessels at the time of the incident were rescued by the MNDF Coast Guard, the two drifting vessels sank approximately 30 nautical miles outside the territorial waters of the Maldives. Due to the rough seas and stormy weather, MNDF urged people not to travel by sea in areas under yellow and orange alerts, and to ensure that vessels traveling are fully equipped with safety measures such as life jackets and water pumps.
